Supported by huge timbers that came from trees along the Fox River, the original Meneely Company bell sits at the top of the bell tower. To reach it today, one must climb two flights of steep, wooden stairs and make a final ascent by wooden ladder. (NOTE: this area is NOT open for public viewing.)

The Meneely Bell Foundry was located in West Troy, New York. The Meneely Company was founded in 1826 by Andrew Meneely (1801-1851). Following Meneely's death, his sons successfully carried on the business for many years. However, WWII (followed by the Korean War) proved fateful for the company, as the copper and tin needed for production became unavailable for non-war operations. The foundry was closed in 1954.
In addition to ringing every Sunday to announce church services, the bell has also been used at weddings and other special occasions. On November 22, 1963, when John F. Kennedy was shot, members of the Yorkville High School "Foxes Lair," rang the bell throughout that historic afternoon. On February 12, 2009, Chapel Board Member, Don Ament, rang the bell for one minute to help commemorate the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. |
